WAUKESHA, Wis. - Senior Alex Manhardt closed out his career with Marian University men's basketball on a high note being named first team All-Conference. Manhardt (West Bend, Wis.) was a leader for the Sabres all season long in scoring and on the glass. The lone senior on the Sabre roster led the NACC in double-doubles with 11 and rebounds per game with 10.0, while also scoring 14.6 points per game. He was also one of the most efficient shooters in the conference ranking second in the conference with a 52.1-percent field goal percentage. Manhardt put his name in the record book in several places with the most notable being only the eighth Sabre in men's basketball history to reach 500 rebounds and 1,000 points in his career. In his career, he finished 17th 1,036 points, 17th in program history, 276 made free throws, fifth all-time, 580 rebounds, seventh all-time, and 89 blocks, tied for sixth in Marian history. His final season in a Sabre jersey saw him grab the fifth most rebounds in a single season with 230 and post the fifth highest rebounds per game average. He also became the first Sabre to be named the NACC Player of the Week since 2014 after registering his fourth double-double of the season in a win against Concordia Chicago. The West Bend, Wis. native shot 7-10 (.700) from the field in the win with a team-high 19 points and 10 rebounds. Manhardt also added two assists and a block in the victory that gave the Sabres an even conference ledger. This is his second All-Conference accolade he has earned after being named All-NACC second team last season. WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Marian University men's basketball frontcourt duo of junior Alex Manhardt and freshman Will Polczynski have been named All-NACC.
Manhardt (West Bend, Wis.) had another big year down low for the Sabres and recorded six double-doubles on the season and was named second-team All-NACC. The junior led the Sabres in scoring for most of the year with 14.5 points per game and ranked fourth in the NACC with 8.4 rebounds per game. Manhardt also showed his prowess for the ball down low ranking fifth in the NACC with 1.48 blocks per game. At the charity stripe, he ranked second for free throw attempts (143) and free throws made (95). In his first season, Polczynski (New Berlin, Wis.) started in 17 games for the Sabres averaging 6.6 points per game and 3.5 rebounds per game, while also shooting 50-percent from the field to earn himself a spot on the All-NACC Freshman team. Polczynski ranked second on the team with nine blocks and also nabbed 15 steals on the season. One of his best performances came at Wisconsin Lutheran with the freshman scored 19 points and grabbed five rebounds with three steals. WAUKESHA, Wis. – Junior Josh Creed earned First Team All-Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference honors for the second-consecutive season, the conference office announced Friday.
Creed, a Chicago native, was a dynamic player for Sabres on both ends of the court. He averaged 17 .0 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. He was efficient from the charity stripe and connected on 83.3 percent of attempted free throws. Creed's best individual performance was Jan. 6 at Lakeland. He scored 32 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, handed out five assists and was 12-of-13 at the charity stripe to lead the Sabres past the Muskies in an 87-81 overtime victory. NACC All-Conference

(SabreAthletics.com) – The Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference has announced its yearly awards for men's basketball and Marian University placed four players on the All-Conference teams, including first team selection Cody Veleke, while Head Coach Mark Boyle hauled in Coach of the Year honors, the league released, today, Feb. 25.
The senior Veleke collects First Team All-NACC honors for the second straight season after averaging 13 points, 4.5 rebounds and ranked third in the league with 1.6 blocks per game for a balanced Sabre squad. Fellow seniors Sam Koslowski and Jeff Harris claimed second team accolades, while Josh Creed was named to the All-Freshman team in his first season with the program. Boyle receives Coach of the Year honors for the fifth time in his career after leading the Sabres to the regular season conference title following a 17-3 league record. Veleke enjoys his third year earning All-NACC honors after earning first team honors last season and All-NACC honorable mention as a sophomore. The Oakfield native eclipsed 1,000 career points in a 24-point, 11-rebound effort in an overtime victory over Wisconsin Lutheran back on Dec. 5. He recently turned in one of his most impressive performances as a Sabres in going 10-for-10 from the field for 23 points, scoring 21 of those in the first half alone in a quarterfinal rout of WLC last Saturday. Koslowski has led the Sabres in scoring all year long and also eclipsed the 1,000-career-point mark this season back on Feb. 15. He registered 18 double-digit scoring performances, including a career-best 32-point effort after going 10-for-13 from the field, including 8-for-10 from three-point range in a win over Benedictine Jan. 4. Harris, who reached 1,000 career points on Dec. 14, registered 13 double-digit scoring performances, including back-to-back 20-plus point games in January. He fell just shy of a career-high when he tallied 29 points on 10-for-13 shooting, while connecting on five three's to lead the Sabres to a come-from-behind win at Benedictine Jan. 18. The Chicago native was an All-NACC honorable mention pick in 2011, following All-Freshman team honors in 2010. Drew Binversie (Valders, Wis.) and Alex Stecker (Oostburg, Wis.) each received All-Freshmen team accolades.
Veleke, who earned honorable mention status in 2012, averaged 14 points on 49.5 percent shooting and 5.6 rebounds per game, all team bests. He also led the Sabres with 23 blocks and 29 steals this season. Veleke sits just 106 points shy of 1,000 for his career and already ranks among top-10 in several all-time Marian laurels. Binversie and Stecker provided some much-needed stability from the guard position for the Sabres as freshmen this season. Binversie proved to be a versatile asset with his ability to contribute in many ways. He finished third on the team with 8.7 points and second in rebounds at 4.8 per game. Stecker led the league in free throw percentage at 90.7 and was third in the NAC with 3.8 assists per contest. In conference-only games, he also led the league in three-point percentage (61.1), converting 22 of his 36 attempts. Lakeland's Jake Schwarz was named NAC Player of the Year after leading the league in scoring and rebounding. Concordia Wisconsin's Steve Zielinski earned NAC Defensive Player of the Year honors, while Austin Stueck (MSOE) was Freshman of the Year and Aurora's James Lancaster garnered Coach of the Year honors. (SabreAthletics.com) – Four Marian University men's basketball players earned All-Northern Athletics Conference postseason awards, including NAC Freshman of the Year Mike Keller, the league office announced today, Feb. 28.
Keller is the first-ever Sabre to earn Freshman of the Year honors. The Oostburg native averaged 9.7 points and 4.3 rebounds, while starting all 26 games for the Sabres. He emerged right away as one of the best defenders on the team and was recognized by the league for his success. Junior Jeff Harris and sophomore Cody Veleke each earned NAC honorable mention accolades, while Charles Ruffing was selected to the All-Sportsmanship team. Harris and Veleke went back-and-forth as team scoring leaders throughout the season. Veleke finished the season with the team-lead in points (15.6) and rebounds (6.4), while Harris finished second in both categories at 15 points and 5.0 rebounds per contest. Ruffing started the final 12 games of the season, winning the point guard spot in a crowded backcourt. He was second on the team with 58 assists on the year. Complete list found here. |
